A Biomedical Engineering student, with a passion for country music, is Matamata Country Music Club’s next guest artist.

Keith Pereira, who is currently studying towards a Masters in Biomedical Engineering while aspiring to be a country musician, will be at the club night on June 17 at the Matamata Primary School hall.

He said his passion for country music started when he was very young.

‘‘My uncle was a radio host on a country music station in Abu Dhabi, so most of my childhood was spent listening to the music he played,’’ he said.

‘‘After moving to New Zealand at the age of 10, my dad started to teach me the guitar which instantly became an important part of life.’’

Since then he has played for a few cover bands for events such as weddings and other functions.

More recently, he joined the Waitemata Country Music Club.

This gave him the motivation to compete in the Auckland Country Music Competition.

This paid off as he managed to win the male vocal and instrumental categories. He then travelled down to Gore for the Gold Guitar Awards where he won the instrumental section.
