Matamata Chronicle - - Your Paper, Your Place -

This week we touch on a couple of local issues that are hot topics at the moment. First of all, reporter Rexine Hawes speaks to former mayor, councillor Bob McGrail who has decided not to contest the coming local government elections in October. We understand there may be a few other current councillors opting not to continue on in local politics and we will bring you those stories over the coming weeks. Those leaving the council surely open up opportunities for new people to put their hands up to lead the district. Staying on the topic of council, we look at plans to redevelop the civic centre. Local man Kevin Tappin is lobbying for the plans to be changed to accommodate a stage at the new facility, otherwise he fears the end of big-budget productions in Matamata. We also speak to a former mayor who believes the current civic buildings should be upgraded, and not demolished. We’re keen to hear what readers have to say on the matter.
