U13 hockey players make Waikato rep teams
Matamata hockey players are making a big mark.
Six Matamata Intermediate students were named in Waikato under 13 rep teams.
Jerome De Wilde made Waikato Hatch, Grace Hayward made Waikato Collier with Shawna Stoner, Ben Pilmore-Evans and Leo Cleaver making the Waikato development team, with Conrad Wilson shortlisted for the development team.
Ben, Jerome, Grace, Conrad, Shawna and Leo play for Mata- mata Intermediate Gold on Friday nights.
‘‘These players didn’t get here by luck or purely on natural talent. There is a champion mindset that is required to reach these higher level.
‘‘It has taken a combination of drive, ambition, training, hard work, passion, competition, wins and losses,’’ says Intermediate Gold hockey coach Kelly Hayward.
She says the new full turf, which has now been completed at Matamata College, means some games can be played in Matamata instead of local teams travelling to Hamilton every Friday night and is giving young players a wonderful opportunity to improve their hockey.
‘‘This team has had some amazing achievements together. They made the premier grade for only the second time in eight years. They have set their goals high and won’t stop until they get there,’’ says Hayward.
