St John’s win over Mata­mata

CO­MAG Mata­mata College 1st XV trav­elled to Hamil­ton on the week­end to play St John’s 1st XV in a semi-fi­nal of the Waika­toCoun­ties Premier Com­pe­ti­tion.

Played in wet and muddy con­di­tions, St John’s size ad­van­tage gave them the edge and they ran out comfortable win­ners in the end.

How­ever, the Mata­mata boys did them­selves proud and they put in a gutsy per­for­mance.

Mata­mata Un­der 15s have com­pleted an un­beaten sea­son in their divi­sion, book­ing a home semi­fi­nal with a 37 to 10 win against Otoro­hanga.

Mata­mata dom­i­nated the first half, pro­duc­ing some very good team tries, giv­ing them a 29-nil ad­van­tage at the break.

Otoro­hanga came back strongly in the sec­ond half with a cou­ple of tries, but a penalty and an­other try to Mata­mata rounded out the scor­ing.

Try scor­ers were: John Couch 3, Gareth Watkins, Te Ra­manui Turner-Beaver and Lo­gan Web­ber. Ge­orge Sa­muels kicked two con­ver­sions and a penalty.

Mata­mata Un­der 14s have fin­ished sec­ond in their Divi­sion and will also have a home semi-fi­nal this week­end. They beat Hamil­ton Boys High School Red by 20 to 15 on Satur­day.

Mata­mata Un­der 65kg had a bye at the week­end but fin­ished their sea­son un­beaten.
