Matamata Chronicle - - Your Paper, Your Place -

Well it appears that there’s no one brave enough to take on incumbent mayor Jan Barnes at the coming local government elections. Mayor Barnes will lead the Matamata-Piako district for another three-year term, after the official list of candidates was released, showing that there were no others contesting the top job. Is this because there’s a lack of interested in local government politics or do people feel that the current mayor is working well, performing her duties to the best of her ability for the district? Initial online feedback suggests people are happy with their current mayor and want her to continue, at least, for the next term. There will be no election in the Piako and Te Aroha wards either, because the number of candidates is the same as the number of seats available. The only contest left can be found in the Matamata ward, where there are five candidates for four seats. Let’s hope people put pen to paper, and take part in the voting process.
