Matamata Chronicle

FROM THE NEWS DESK

-

In this week’s Chronicle we have a strong focus on the local government elections with interviews on returning mayor Jan Barnes plus a look at the candidates contesting the Matamata Ward. Reporter Mike Bain speaks to Barnes about her aspirations for the coming threeyear term, which include preparing the district for growth, in terms of increases in population, as well as taking advantage of tourism opportunities. Reporter Rexine Hawes also speaks to the candidates for the Matamata ward to find out why they want to represent their community on council. Moving away from politics, Rexine also has a story on a popular pet feline that had taken up residency in a local cafe. Buddy, as the friendly cat is known, was targeted by a dog and following a scuffle, Buddy has gone missing. Nearby shop owners and customers are distraught at the loss of the furry face and are appealing for help to find Buddy.
