Matamata’s Centennial Drive committee has been left to clean up a mess after vandals destroyed half a tonne of ferns.

The Fernery, a walkway in Centennial Drive between Tamihana and Tawa Streets was targeted by vandals one afternoon recently.

Five Centennial Drive committee members were at the site cleaning up the mess.

Committee member Jim Paton confirmed vandals destroyed half a tonne of ferns, by pulling fronds to make what appears to be a hut.

In the process, the vandals pulled the water system down to gain access to wire and climbed into private property to pull bricks out.

Matamata-Piako Police prevention supervisor Blair Hayde says police will speak to a person in relation to the vandalism attack.

CCTV footage of the incident was supplied and police were trying to identify five others involved.

Paton says the Centennial Drive committee meet once a month to keep the area tidy but when there is damage to an important visitor site, they make it a priority to deal with it immediately.
