Bomb left outside cop shop

The woman who drove from Auckland to Matamata with a bomb in her car was unaware it could be a danger.

The woman, who did not want to be named, has come forward to clarify some of the information provided by the police about how they came to get the bomb. In an initial story the police said the bomb was left under a tree because the Matamata Police station was closed when the woman arrived to drop it off.

They then called in the Auckland-based army bomb disposal team for identification. But the woman said she didn’t leave the bomb under the tree at all.

The woman said when she approached the police station it appeared closed. She called the after hours number and a police officer came out.

‘‘... where he looked at the device and we had a brief conversation and then I left. It was put on the ground during this time, in a box, but It was never at any stage ‘left’ for anyone to just find.’’

She said the bomb was brought back to Matamata with other items after clearing a family house in the Auckland area. She had no knowledge at the time that ‘‘it was or could be dangerous’’.
