A 36-year-old man has been taken to hos­pi­tal af­ter a home in­va­sion in a Waikato town on Satur­day.

Three peo­ple broke into the Mata­mata home early in the morn­ing and as­saulted the oc­cu­pant be­fore flee­ing with stolen goods.

Po­lice at­tended the in­ci­dent at a Sta­tion Road ad­dress at 5.20am on Satur­day.

The vic­tim is in hos­pi­tal with mod­er­ate in­juries.

One neigh­bour woke to po­lice cars in the street but had not heard any­thing be­fore­hand.

The street is typ­i­cally quiet, neigh­bours say.

There are a num­ber of el­derly peo­ple liv­ing in the area.

Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the in­ci­dent and look­ing for the of­fend­ers in­volved in the at­tack.

Po­lice had spo­ken to a num­ber of peo­ple in the neigh­bour­hood on Satur­day to bet­ter un­der­stand what might have hap­pened.
