Matamata Chronicle - - Your Paper, Your Place -

All over New Zealand, community groups are finding it difficult to lock in volunteers for their various events and activities. Reporter Rexine Hawes’ front page article demonstrates once such example, locally, of a Scouts group trying hard to find a leader to ensure the future of the group. There are many other organisations in communities also struggling to find support. People are leading busy lives these days with little time left to offer others outside of their immediate family. This could spell the end of long-time organisations which give so much back to the community. It’s also a topic our guest columnist, Adrienne Wilcock, hits on, on page 15. So it’s important to think about how we can set a little time aside to help others. It could be to your local sports club, after-school activities, childcare group or maybe of the many projects being led by Rotary and Lions clubs. There’s a lot of reward in working as a volunteer in your community.
