Traditional show gets cancelled

Organisers were left with no choice but to cancel the 103rd Matamata A&P Spring Carnival Show last weekend.

Inclement weather conditions left the grounds in a state where it had become a safety issue for both animals and the public.

Secretary Jeff Nobes said he was disappointed but even getting access into the grounds was an issue and with the weather forecasts for more rain, prompted an early decision to call off the show.

‘‘Such is the calendar for the Equestrian events Matamata will now have to wait until next year before it can run its 103rd show.’’

Equine competitors were expected to come from across the Waikato and Auckland to compete in the equestrian event.

But not all is lost as the calf club section featuring lambs goats and calves was still able to proceed at Hinuera Rugby Club.

Two other A&P Shows are on the calendar in the district with the Waikato A&P Show being held at the Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton on October 28 and preparations and entries are also being taken for the 120th A&P Show for Te Aroha on November 5.
