Country music focus on family
A focus on family will be a fitting theme for the guest performers at the next Matamata Country Music Club night.
The club holds a theme night annually in November and this year, on the 18th, it will include a special performance by the Stewart family.
Club secretary Ashley Tipping says the family has roots deeply embedded in the club and in country music.
Murray Stewart is the club vice president and wife Lisa is responsible for various administration and hosting responsibilities.
As for the four Stewart children, there’s Caleb, who works for Laser Plumbing Matamata, his sister Gemma is in her second year training as a midwife.
Alicia is finishing a bachelor of arts degree at Otago University in music and psychology and Narelle, is studying occupational therapy at WINTEC in Hamilton.
The family have been finalists in the NZ Country Music Awards, for entertainer of the year.
‘‘To have the Stewarts as guest artists is really exciting,’’ says Ashley.
‘‘I’m not sure of the last time they performed together, but it was a while.’’
Family is very important for the Matamata Country Music Club, and it’s a night many in the club are excited about.
‘‘We have so many families, so we wanted to give them all a chance to get up with their dads, mums and sisters, and sing together.
‘‘The club is a safe place for singers, where it doesn’t matter what your ability is, it’s just a great place to get up with the band.
‘‘Even though it’s a country music club, we offer variety. So kids who want to sing, but perhaps not a country music song, can get up and sing anything.’’
Ashley’s husband Michael is club president.
He presents the The McKinley Family trophy to the member of the month.
The trophy was donated by Lynley McKinley, in honour of her husband Kerry who died in April, 2015.
They were both members with the Matamata Country Music Club.
The Country Music Club meets every third Friday of the month, at the Matamata Primary School Hall.
Doors open at 6pm, entertainment starts at 7pm. Entry is $4 for non members.
The Stewart family will be performing at this month’s Matamata Country Music family-themed club night.
