Praise, reward for our sport leaders
Dwayne Barlow, Graeme Laing and Matthew Stanley were among the recipients who received top honours at the Ingham MatamataPiako District Sports Awards.
Graeme Laing was not only named Coach of the Year but also won Personality of the Year at the awards held on Thursday night at the Tatuanui Community Hall.
Laing attended the Olympics in Rio this year while continuing his outstanding form with athletes from the Matamata Swimming Club.
Sport Waikato MatamataPiako District Co-ordinator Lou Beer was very pleased with the high calibre of nominations, finalists and winners this year.
‘‘Sporting success is alive and well in Matamata-Piako, our junior categories once again represented the wealth of youth talent coming through. The judges found some categories very difficult to judge, which is great for sport and recreation in the district,’’ Beer said.
Dwayne Barlow received the administrator of the year award, for his services to football.
The humble sportsman says while the award was a pleasant surprise, he recognises the team which keeps football growing.
‘‘We’ve built a good administration team at the club over the last couple of years and it’s now a proper team effort. I think this award is reflective of the team effort.
‘‘Football’s on a steady growth trajectory in our community, as it is across the country. There is so much more on offer in the game now than when some of us were growing up.
‘‘As a club sometimes it’s hard to keep up and deliver everything that’s available but we do the best we can with the resources we have. We have good playing numbers, some excellent coaches, incredibly loyal sponsors and a great group of fans, which is a solid base for further growth.’’
Eligible winners are now con- sidered for the Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Claudelands Conference and Event Centre, Hamilton. Laing.
