Waikato-Tainui will build a five-star hotel at Auckland Airport.

The hotel will be called Te Arikinui, after the Maori King’s mother.

The new complex will be behind the Novotel Tainui at the International Terminal on Ray Emery Drive.

Waikato-Tainui spokesman Tukoroirangi Morgan said work will begin in December when discussing Tainui’s investments at a recent Federation of Maori Authorities conference.

He also said the tribe was looking to divest itself from a majority holding in property - from over 50 percent of its investment portfolio to under 20 percent.

Auckland Airport was not a position to comment, but a spokesman said the company was excited about a new hotel coming to the airport.
