Matamata Chronicle - - Your Paper, Your Place -

This week’s lead story touches on an issue facing many rural Waikato towns, as people seek to move out of the big cities and into the regions. A developer, Freedom Villages, has proposed a retirement village in Matamata. There’s been an allergic reaction to the plans from some residents, following meetings/ correspondence between the developer and those living around the proposed site on Burwood Rd. One argument is that the style of housing proposed will lower the value of surrounding properties, a point which is open to interpretation and debate. People are also worried the development would come at the loss of the Longlands Farms property, a wellknown and cherished venue, which was highly regarded in the community. Another side to the story is that the development would provide much-needed accommodation for people seeking to retire in Matamata. It’s a story that’s likely to generate much debate and we look forward to your feedback.
