FROM THE NEWS DESK
On the front page you would have read a story about a move to set up some official direction to grow economic development in the Matamata-Piako district. It’s probably long overdue but prompted by the popularity of Hobbiton, coupled with the advancement of tourism across the district and Waikato region. It also comes after research showing the district can’t rely on the primary sector alone for economic wealth and it must look to new industries to help move things along, and certainly tourism is looming as one of those options. At the top of the list has to be the development of a cycle trail from Te Aroha to Matamata. From what I understand this idea has been many years in the pipeline but it looks like the Matamata-Piako District Council is undertaking serious planning to get the project heading towards fruition. This will connect Matamata to the popular Hauraki Rail Trail which has proved to be a hit with local people and visitors to the Coromandel.
