Tourism continues to deliver more people and their business into Matamata but parking along the town’s main street is mounting as a problem. The businesses we spoke to for our story on page 3, said they appreciated the extra activity during the busy summer tourism season but were keen to see some more work around providing additional parking spaces. Community leaders on the other hand believe there is plenty of car parking available, on side streets and just outside of the main CBD area, but people are unwilling to walk a few hundred metres back to the shop they want to visit. It’s a Kiwi custom in rural towns to be able to park right outside the shop you want to visit. If you can’t do this, then there must be something very wrong with the world. It’s that culture community leaders are asking people to change, to accommodate shoppers, visitors, tourists and those who work in what is becoming a very busy town centre.
