Far­quhar hon­oured at awards

Re­tir­ing javelin cham­pion Stu­art Far­quhar was the only Mata­mataPi­ako ath­lete to claim an award at the re­cent Brian Perry Waikato Re­gional Sports Awards.

The stan­dard of sports peo­ple in the Waikato ‘‘is ex­cep­tion­ally high’’ and Sport Waikato co­or­di­na­tor Lou Beer while ob­vi­ously dis­ap­pointed was still proud of the achieve­ments of the dis­trict’s five fi­nal­ists con­test­ing this year’s awards.

‘‘To be named as a fi­nal­ists is an achieve­ment in, its ac­knowl­edge­ment of their ded­i­ca­tion and train­ing to their in­di­vid­ual sport,’’ she said.

Stu­art Far­quhar, from Te Aroha, re­ceived a spe­cial award for his ser­vice to ath­let­ics af­ter an 18 year in­volve­ment which re­sulted in win­ning 15 na­tional ti­tles and a bronze medal at the 2010 Com­mon­wealth Games in Delhi.

But it was Eric Mur­ray’s night as he claimed his sev­enth Sports­man of the Year Award.

The award has al­most been ex­clu­sively Mur­ray’s since 2009 for his out­stand­ing achieve­ments in row­ing, with Hamil­ton boxer David Nyika the only other winner of the prize af­ter win­ning gold at the Com­mon­wealth Games in Glas­gow in 2014.
