Perfect greens for top games
The Hinuera Bowling Club has been able to complete its Championship Singles for Men and Women as well as the Mixed Triples over the past fortnight.
With the club greens running well under the direction of head green keeper Bert Simpson, it gave the bowlers an opportunity to play fantastic bowls and this was well evident during the Singles Championships.
The Women’s Singles had a small turnout of four entries. Defending champ Bev Corbett and Debbie White played in the final with Bev playing exceptional lead bowls coming out a resounding winner 21-6.
In the Men’s Singles there were eight qualifiers Stu Settle, Bruce Milne, Gerard Slattery, Dwayne Cameron, Brendon Brill, Kevin Smith, Paul Casey Snr and Jnr to face the starter on the Sunday.
The semi finals were Stu Settle beating Bruce Milne 21-19 and Brendon Brill beating Gerard Slattery 21-20. Brendon was down 12-20 but scored nine shots in the last four ends. The final was a hard battle but Stu Settle came out on top against Brendon Brill 21-15.
The Mixed Triples Championship was played last weekend. It was decided to play a ‘butterfly draw’ with the top two teams from each section qualifying for the semi final.
The semi finals were Linda Jeffries team of Paul Casey Snr and Jnr playing Gerard Slattery, Graeme Morgan and Jill Bergh.
The other game was Stu Settle’s team of Bev Corbett and Ian Reid playing Ross McGrail, Bevan Reed.
Both games had comfortable wins for Gerard Slattery and Ross McGrail who then met in the final.
It was a close encounter but team McGrail just edged out team Slattery 18-14.
The Intermediate Singles were played earlier in January and after the first day there were eight qualifiers found Tamati Sidney, Jocelyn Holten, Andy Maber, Shelley and Margaret Billy Corbett, Peter Hughes, Graeme Morgan, Paul Casey Snr and Jnr.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t good for play on the second day and that has now been transferred to February 18.
Next weekend the club plays the Junior Pairs Championship along with a sponsored club day and the following weekend. The following the week club hosts the Matamata Combined Clubs fiveday tournament.
Mixed Triples Champions Margaret Reed, Ross McGrail and Bevan Shelley.
Brother and sister act with Championship Singles victories Bev Corbett and Stu Settle.
