Super Swim Squad for Caleb
A Matamata boy has just earned a place in a coveted national junior swim squad.
Twelve-year-old Caleb Lawrence won his age group at Saturday’s Legend of the Lake swim held in Rotorua, the fourth event in the seven swim New Zealand Ocean Swim Series.
His win in the 200m Banana Boat OceanKids event has secured him a place in the Jetstar Super Swim Squad.
It will mean he will travel to Auckland in May for a weekend camp with some top name elite swimmers and coaches. Throughout the season, each qualifying event will allow children the opportunity to earn a place in the 36 member squad.
‘‘I’m looking forward to meeting new people, especially some of New Zealand’s top swimmers,’’ said Caleb.
Caleb trains at Matamata Swim Club two-to-three times a week.
He was cheered on at the event by his family and swimming coach.
‘‘Caleb was stoked to cross the finish line,’’ said Caleb’s mum Sharon Lawrence.
‘‘I’m hoping that being part of the squad and attending the camp will inspire Caleb to keep swimming and reach his full potential.’’
Scott Rice, New Zealand Ocean Swim Series, event director, says airline Jetstar’s support over the past five years has benefited over 150 youngsters and their families throughout New Zealand.
‘‘It’s not just the development of their technical skills but also the confidence they have gained from being exposed to positive, Olympic role models as well as training alongside their national swimming peers. Many of them have gone on to compete at a national level.’’
