Search on for junior footballers
Matamata Swifts AFC is looking for the next crop of junior footballers.
The club is preparing for the coming junior football season and is holding registration evenings this month.
The Swifts’ Junior Coordinator Ronan Costello said the club is looking forward to another strong year of football in the community.
‘‘The junior season begins on May 6 and runs throughout terms 2 and 3.’’
‘‘It probably seems too early to be thinking about playing a winter sport now, but with things like grading and team selection needing to be done in March, due to team entry deadlines and the April school holidays, players need to sign up now,’’ said Costello.
‘‘We’ve got a lot to offer young sports people this season.
‘‘Our subs have been kept at the same levels as 2016 for our junior teams and minikickers programme.
‘‘Teams are open to players ranging in age from eight to 14, while mini-kickers provides an excellent introduction to the game for players seven and under.’’
Girls’ football has extra focus in the Waikato during 2017, with a number of girls-only leagues on offer.
‘‘This means we can offer girlsonly teams, which have been proven in other parts of the country to increase enjoyment and involvement of girls in football,’’ explains Costello.
‘‘It’s a good, fun way for girls who want to give football a go but previously may not have fancied playing in mixed teams.
‘‘Players should register online, or they can sign-up at one of our registration evenings. Junior grading follows on Sunday, March 12. The team from The Soccer Shop will be at grading this year, so players will be able to get all the gear they need for the season then too.’’ Matamata Swifts Junior Football Registration:
