Matamata Chronicle - - Your Paper, Your Place -

The future of the Peter Petersen water fountain outside the Matamata Civic Centre continues to generate debate. Several objectors have unwisely taken to Facebook to give their version of events over the past few weeks. Some of the comments made have been unprofessional, in my view, and have not helped to move the matter to resolution. On our Chronicle Neighbourly page however, debate on the matter has been much more civilised, mainly because to comment on this platform people have to use their real names, verified through the sign-up process. Therefore feedback tends to be a lot more measured and sensible. And comments we’ve had on the fountain via Neighbourly have allowed people to speak out, for and against, the proposal to demolish the fountain. The hysteria built up in recent weeks to save the fountain hasn’t stopped more informed ratepayers questioning the longterm costs of keeping the fountain.
