Business is a cut above the rest

After over 20 years in the mower and chainsaw trade, Jon Burnside knows his stuff.

He and wife Janelle own Mower and Chainsaw Specialists on Arawa Street, and have recently been recognised by Husqvarna for their service.

They were presented with a plaque for Recognition of Outstanding Excellence, and after only two years with Husqvarna, it’s left the couple feeling pretty good.

‘‘They approached us a few years ago to take the brand on. They wanted someone to get the brand out there and knew Jon by reputation,’’ said Janelle.

Jon started out in the mower business as an apprentice in his teens. Eventually he took on his own business, on a staff of three.

‘‘Started with just me and my parents. I brought the business and they helped me get it off the ground,’’ he said.

Now, 13 years later, his parents have left the business and he is managing a staff of five.

Jon and Janelle married in 2008 and since then she has had a hand in the running of the business too - working part-time in the office.

While many business owners don’t agree to having spouses on the shop floor, for Jon and Janelle, it’s a good partnership.

‘‘It’s brilliant, but it can get edgy,’’ he laughed. ‘‘We are too busy for any marital arguments.’’

The couple’s young children also use the shop as a home away from home. Holly, 10, and Connor, 11, love being with their parents at work.

And they can learn a lot from their parents on how to make a small business thrive.

‘‘You need to have good customer service. It’s just being straight up, you can’t expect people to come back if you are being cagey. That’s all I want when I go into a shop,’’ said Jon.

‘‘They just want that special attention from the owner.

‘‘We pick up new customers everyday, and the feedback is always good.’’

Moving forward they plan to continue improving the business.

‘‘We want to provide the same great customer service, best product and service, look after the Matamata community and provide all our knowledge of the industry,’’ said Jon.

‘‘We certainly want to grow, we really are only just starting.’’
