I per­son­ally be­lieve that the foun­tain is ugly, out­dated and an un­nec­es­sary bur­den on the Mata­mata-Pi­ako ratepayer. It is an old struc­ture which ob­vi­ously needs a ma­jor over­haul/ re­fur­bish­ment and will con­tinue to be a cost to all of us ratepay­ers in the Mata­mata-Pi­ako dis­trict. The money do­nated by the Petersen fam­ily would have been fully utilised some years ago and I won­der how much we have had to sub­sidise this over the last few years. I would also ask, how many of the 12,000 or so Mata­mata res­i­dents are di­rectly ac­quainted with the Petersen fam­ily? Yes he did heroic deeds and I am­sure there are many more he­roes who did sim­i­lar mem­o­rable deeds and who are re­lated to res­i­dents of Mata­mata. Per­son­ally I lost two un­cles in WWII.
