School’s milestone 125th year
In two weeks Hazel Logan ( nee Wallace) will receive a letter for Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for her 100th birthday.
But on Saturday she attended a birthday celebration of a different kind.
Hazel held the honour of being the oldest former student at the Hinuera School 125th year anniversary reunion.
The school and community celebrated the milestone over two days, March 31 and April 1.
Hazel held the honour of being the only past pupil from the 1920s to attend.
She attended Hinuera Primary School from 1923 to 1927 and now lives in Morrinsville.
The reunion was the first time Hazel had returned to the school since she left.
‘‘It’s a thrill to be here,’’ she says.
‘‘It’s been really amazing and emotional.
‘‘Everything has grown much since I was here.
‘‘I think there was only one classroom then.’’
The school and community celebrated the reunion with a wine and cheese evening on Friday night.
On Saturday, the school celebrated with a thanksgiving service, shared lunch and cutting of a special cake. so
Photos of students and teachers were taken from each decade.
Current student Roy Tiddy and Matamata-Piako mayor Jan Barnes commemorated the event by planting a tree on the school grounds.
Preparations for the anniversary started six months ago, by a dedicated committee.
Marie Hicks, secretary for the 125th celebration says the committee, teachers and school students have had a great time planning the reunion.
‘‘The students excited,’’ she said.
‘‘What made it so great and emotional for past students is the current students wrote letters for the registration packs. were so
‘‘Some people have written letters back students. ‘‘It was such a great idea. ‘‘I love history and knowing that people were here learning over 100 years ago, and that those students were coming, it’s very sentimental.’’
