Road to Argentina realised
Matamata College’s rugby tour team leaves for Argentina carrying a reminder of a mate who more than anything wanted to be with them.
Corbin Morgan, 16, died in a car crash in November. He was part of the touring team which had been fundraising for the trip of a lifetime.
On Sunday, the team met for final preparations ahead of their arrival in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
The players were presented with their tour jersey which carries a symbol to represent Corbin.
The 28-player team will be led by captain Graeson Tanirau and vice captain Chase Pauro.
From Buenos Aires, they will travel to Bahı´a Blanca for the rugby tournament.
Coaches Richard Waru and Daryl Bennison are proud of the players.
Bennison says being on the tour team is no guarantee of making the 1st XV but it is a way of developing players.
‘‘It’s a young team but we are looking forward to seeing how they develop,’’ says Bennison.
‘‘We are hoping some of them will really push to make the 1st XV.’’
This is the third tour Matamata College has participated in, with previous trips to Gold Coast and Canada.
