FROM THE NEWS DESK
We would like to thank those who took part in our coupon survey, published a few weeks ago, asking people to vote or on whether to retain the Petersen water fountain. Some people have asked when the survey closes. I can officially say the survey is now closed. It was never touted as a be-all and end-all, scientific survey on ratepayers. That’s the job of the Matamata-Piako District Council and it is asking for public feedback as it decides the fate of the popular fountain outside the civic centre. Our coupon survey was an unofficial poll to gage public feedback on the matter. Some people photocopied the paper to record more votes while others took pictures of the coupon on their phone to send in. Whatever the method, the coupon was a huge success in showing this community paper’s connection with readers. It has generated a lot more debate and constructive conversation. The tough decision is now with the council as it weighs up the pros and cons for keeping the fountain.
