Sec­ond for col­lege 1st XV

COMAG Mata­mata Col­lege 1st XV sit in sec­ond place in the Waikato Sec­ondary Schools Divi­sion One Rugby com­pe­ti­tion af­ter beat­ing Hill­crest 24-3 at the week­end.

Mata­mata scored two tries in the first half, the first to winger Hay­den Atkin who slid over in the cor­ner af­ter half­back Te Aonui Wharawa­hara-Muri­wai had made a break and put Atkin in space.

Just be­fore half­time Mata­mata forced a turnover and flanker John Couch was able to get a good pass away to Os­car Mor­ris­sey who was then able to sprint 50 me­ters to dot down for Mata­mata’s sec­ond try and give them the lead by 12-3 at half­time.

John Couch was next to score af­ter a strong run by sec­ond-five Kieran Holdsworth put Mata­mata on at­tack.

Quick hands put winger Ben Ma­son into space and when he was tack­led just short of the line, Couch was there to scoop up the loose ball and score the try.

Prop Dion O’Leary, who had an ex­cel­lent game popped a short ball to Mor­ris­sey who crashed over the line for Mata­mata’s fi­nal try. Two con­ver­sions by Holdsworth com­pleted the scor­ing giv­ing Mata­mata the win.

The 2nd XV went down to Cambridge 27-17. Jor­dan Ruck and Ge­orge Sa­muels were the try scor­ers.

The Un­der 15s won 32-22 against Te Awa­mutu. Try scor­ers were Matt O’Brien (2), Baylee Mitchell- Har­man, Bradley Rum­ble and Brodie Hodge.

The Un­der 14s went down to Pu­taruru 24-5.

The girls team had a nar­row loss to Fair­field on Wed­nes­day last week, 22-17.

Try scor­ers were Mor­gan Nor­ris (2) and Tal­isha Tay­lor. Nor­ris, Tay­lor and Re­nee Withers were the stand outs for Mata­mata.
