Second for college 1st XV
COMAG Matamata College 1st XV sit in second place in the Waikato Secondary Schools Division One Rugby competition after beating Hillcrest 24-3 at the weekend.
Matamata scored two tries in the first half, the first to winger Hayden Atkin who slid over in the corner after halfback Te Aonui Wharawahara-Muriwai had made a break and put Atkin in space.
Just before halftime Matamata forced a turnover and flanker John Couch was able to get a good pass away to Oscar Morrissey who was then able to sprint 50 meters to dot down for Matamata’s second try and give them the lead by 12-3 at halftime.
John Couch was next to score after a strong run by second-five Kieran Holdsworth put Matamata on attack.
Quick hands put winger Ben Mason into space and when he was tackled just short of the line, Couch was there to scoop up the loose ball and score the try.
Prop Dion O’Leary, who had an excellent game popped a short ball to Morrissey who crashed over the line for Matamata’s final try. Two conversions by Holdsworth completed the scoring giving Matamata the win.
The 2nd XV went down to Cambridge 27-17. Jordan Ruck and George Samuels were the try scorers.
The Under 15s won 32-22 against Te Awamutu. Try scorers were Matt O’Brien (2), Baylee Mitchell- Harman, Bradley Rumble and Brodie Hodge.
The Under 14s went down to Putaruru 24-5.
The girls team had a narrow loss to Fairfield on Wednesday last week, 22-17.
Try scorers were Morgan Norris (2) and Talisha Taylor. Norris, Taylor and Renee Withers were the stand outs for Matamata.
