Matamata Chronicle - - Your Paper, Your Place -

Former stand-up comedian Mike King made a two-day visit last week, to speak to students at the district’s three secondary schools, as well as to a community meeting in Matamata. He was invited here by the MatamataPiako Volunteer Youth Ambassadors, to talk about his own experiences with depression, in the hope of inspiring audiences to support one another when it came to mental health issues. I went along to his presentation to students at Matamata College. He spoke about how he was bullied as a child at school and that contributed to low self esteem and confidence. Alcohol and drugs supplied that confidence but soon those highs proved to be more trouble than good. About 10 years ago he made some changes in his life and he explained to students how and why he made those changes. Students hung on to every word. It is a shame Mike declined to be interviewed. It would have been nice to hear his thoughts on his visit to the district.
