Tributes flow for ‘beautiful’ Ellie
Parents, teachers and pupils have been left devastated after a sevenyear-old girl died at her school.
Ellie Marie Kurth, 7, died at the grounds of Walton School last Thursday afternoon.
Ellie is the daughter of Walton school principal Jeremy Kurth and senior hub teacher Anna Kurth.
The school was celebrating Matariki with a shared Hangi, which was being uncovered on school grounds at the time, a statement from the school’s Board of Trustee said.
Police confirmed they were called to the school at 1.55pm, along with an ambulance.
It was understood Ellie’s condition worsened and despite medical attention she died at the scene. Her death has been referred to the Coroner.
‘‘The beautiful Ellie passed away at school surrounded by people who loved her,’’ her funeral notice read.
‘‘Loved daughter of Jeremy and Anna, caring little sister of Brenna.’’
The BoT spokesperson said the Ministry of Education’s traumatic incident team was on site to help the staff and students through the tragic loss.
‘‘This is of course a terrible shock for her family, staff, students and the wider Walton School community,’’ they said in a statement.
‘‘This is of course a very sad and difficult time for our tightknit staff and school community who are pulling together to deal with this tragic event. Our collective thoughts are with the Kurth family in this terrible time of loss.’’
‘‘To our beautiful little Ellie Minelli, why did this happen?,’’ a funeral notice printed on Monday said.
‘‘We are so incredibly heartbroken at the thought of life without you. You were so special to so many people and brought laughter and light to our lives every single day. You and Brenna are everything to us and always will be. Your beautiful spirit always shines and will never ever dim. We miss you Ellie. Sleep tight our darling girl. We love you so much, now and forever x.’’
In 2013 Ellie’s mother fundraised $1700 for the Kidz First Children’s Hospital at Middlemore to replace a stolen iPad.
Anna’s daughter Ellie had been receiving regular treatment at the hospital to treat a rare skin condition.
Tributes have been flowing for the ‘‘beautiful soul’’ on a post about Ellie’s death on the school’s Facebook page.
The Ministry of Education head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said the deputy principal would be managing the school while the principal is on a period of leave.
