A shift from plastic to reusable bags has also had an affect in opportunity stores, which rely on donations of plastic bags from the community.

Hospice Waikato retail manager Teresa Bidlake says stores often run out of plastic bags.

But more people are either supplying their own bags, or choosing to go bagless and carry items out to their cars.

‘‘Many more customers bring their own recyclable shopping bags.

‘‘When we have no bags we do place a sign on the window asking for the community to donate these bags to us for recycling with a very favourable response.’’
