Matamata Chronicle - - Your Local News - REXINE HAWES

Matamata police are puzzled following a month-long spate of unusual thefts.

Garden ornaments have been the outstanding item of interest stolen in Matamata.

Matamata police officer in charge Blair Hayde says the items taken are not of great monetary value and police can’t see a motive for the thefts.

In the past month there have been over 12 reports of missing garden ornaments, six-to-eight in the past two weeks.

He is encouraging people to tighten security around homes, including adding CCTV and security lights.

People should be alert to pet dogs barking during the night.

He says this is a good time to be a nice neighbour and keep an eye on properties together, report anything suspicious and take photos using a smart phone where possible.

Police would like to hear any information about who may be responsible.

‘‘Please come in an see us, or call. Confidentiality is available,’’ said Hayde.

Call 0800 Crime Stoppers (555 111) or 111 if you need to contact police or report suspicious activity.
