Matamata Col­lege earns place in semi-fi­nal

CO­MAG Matamata Col­lege 1st XV rugby team scored a nar­row 7-6 win over Hill­crest High School 1st XV on the week­end, to earn a semi-fi­nal spot in the Waikato Sec­ondary Schools Di­vi­sion 1 com­pe­ti­tion.

Matamata had a ter­ri­to­rial ad­van­tage in the first half but was un­able to turn any of their op­por­tu­ni­ties into points.

Hill­crest kicked two penal­ties to give them the lead at half time by 6-0.

Prop Dion O’Leary put Matamata on the board in the sec­ond half when he scored next to the posts af­ter a strong run from a quick tap.

Kieran Holdsworth added the con­ver­sion to give Matamata the lead 7-6.

Both teams had op­por­tu­ni­ties to score dur­ing the re­main­der of the game, but good de­fence meant that Matamata held on for the win.

The Matamata Col­lege Un­der 14 rugby team has also qual­i­fied for the semi-fi­nals in in its di­vi­sion with an ex­cel­lent per­for­mance against the pre­vi­ously un­beaten Pu­taruru U14 out­fit.

Tries to Kahn Todd, Tyrell Tay­lor and Daze­jon Wi­tika as well as two con­ver­sions by Haimoana Davis sealed the win for Matamata, 19-12.
