Matamata College earns place in semi-final
COMAG Matamata College 1st XV rugby team scored a narrow 7-6 win over Hillcrest High School 1st XV on the weekend, to earn a semi-final spot in the Waikato Secondary Schools Division 1 competition.
Matamata had a territorial advantage in the first half but was unable to turn any of their opportunities into points.
Hillcrest kicked two penalties to give them the lead at half time by 6-0.
Prop Dion O’Leary put Matamata on the board in the second half when he scored next to the posts after a strong run from a quick tap.
Kieran Holdsworth added the conversion to give Matamata the lead 7-6.
Both teams had opportunities to score during the remainder of the game, but good defence meant that Matamata held on for the win.
The Matamata College Under 14 rugby team has also qualified for the semi-finals in in its division with an excellent performance against the previously unbeaten Putaruru U14 outfit.
Tries to Kahn Todd, Tyrell Taylor and Dazejon Witika as well as two conversions by Haimoana Davis sealed the win for Matamata, 19-12.
