Undefeated run leads to Bowers Cup title

Matamata Chronicle - - Property - RUGBY

Matamata has won the Bowers Cup and the team players and coaches have even more reason to celebrate, as it’s the first time Matamata has won the title since 1996.

Bowers Cup, sponsored by Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours, is a representative level competition for intermediate age boys under 45kg.

Coached by Josh Aarsen and Kerry Balsom and managed by Andrea Collins, Matamata won the final after playing undefeated throughout the tournament.

On several occasions over the five-week tournament, Matamata sent the opposing team home with no points on the scoreboard, such as the case with Southern Reds 36-0, Tritons 45-0, Te Awamutu 36-0 and Cambridge 22-0.

Aarsen said this year the team included three Year 6 boys Jack Edgecombe, Xavier Bell and Flynn Morey who stepped up to play well with the older boys and ‘‘full credit to them they played well’’.

‘‘I was impressed with the talent of the boys and really believed they could take out the competition. I think it was more than outstanding individual players, it was an outstanding team effort and they have been a fantastic bunch to coach,’’ he said.

Captain Reegan Aarsen and vice captain Conor Goodwin led their team with confidence and pride. .

For the first time since 1996, Matamata has won the Bowers Cup and did so undefeated.
