The Matamata-Piako District Council was quick to demolish the Pete Petersen water fountain as soon as a resolution was reached with the Petersen family. On to the next problem. Headon Stadium. Recently the council’s corporate and operations committee met where funding repairs to the stadium was one of the hot topics, as you would have read in Rexine Hawes’ story on page 1. The stadium is in desperate need of repair but the committee was told that the $2 million set aside for maintenance work was not accessible until 2019. A report on the stadium’s current condition suggested repairs to some parts needed to be made soon. But with no budget, and no money accessible right now to fix those problems, it seems the council has painted itself into a corner. This brings forward the argument that the council should support the proposal by Matamata Futures, to build a new sports stadium. Mayor Jan Barnes wants to open up the debate to the community before the council makes a decision.
