MATAMATA BREEDERS’ STAKES DAY

‘‘I do want to be pretty like my big sister when I am older.’’

The J. Swap Contractors Ltd Matamata Breeders’ Stakes Day is one of the biggest race days in the Matamata Racing Club’s calendar.

It welcomes in powerful horses, experienced jockeys, big punters and the most extravagant hats, shoes and dresses.

It’s a day for the best of the best and in among it all will be sevenyear-old Kyla Howe.

Kyla is entering the Junior Fashion in the Field for the second time.

Last year it was held at Railside by the Green. This year it’s held at the Breeders Stakes Race Day, preceding senior Fashion in the Field events Envisage Black & White Raceday Elegance and Jane’s Fashion and Accessories Avant Garde.

Kyla said she is a mix of nerves and excitement. She absolutely loved her first event last year and is excited for her second one.

‘‘I really enjoyed it, it was fun. I like dressing up, I feel beautiful.’’

Kyla didn’t place in last year’s event but she doesn’t care about winning, she just loves dressing up.

‘‘I do want to be pretty like my big sister when I am older,’’ she said.

It’s something mum Robyn gets excited about too.

She encouraged Kyla to enter last year, but the young girl didn’t need any persuading this year.

‘‘I told Kyla it was coming back this year and she screamed yes, yes.’’

For Robyn it’s not just to see your youngest daughter all dressed up but the opportunities it gives her.

‘‘I was hoping she would gain confidence. I wanted to her to get used to being around people and entertaining. I knew she would enjoy it.

‘‘I don’t want anything to hold her back in life - like being shy.

‘‘I felt really proud of her confidence and seeing her smiling.’’

Robyn said it’s a special time for the two of them - a project just between mother and daughter.

‘‘I enjoy seeing her enjoy it - it’s really special.

‘‘She loves make up, it’s a good excuse to allow her to wear it.’’

Robyn and Kyla are now busy organising her outfit, matching the dress to a fascinator and shoes.

Robyn has a few ideas but of course it’s all pretty secretive until the big unveiling on race day.

‘‘More than anything we just want her to have an enjoyable day and have fun.’’
