Murph gets gravel gig
Holden Ambassador and four-time Bathurst champion, Greg Murphy, has set himself a new motorsport challenge, one which will see him swap 300km/h laps charging around The Mountain to sliding sideways around the back country roads of New Zealand.
The new endeavour will partner Murphy with experienced rally champion Josh Marston in a two-car team, competing in the 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship in purposebuilt four-wheel-drive NZAP4-spec Holden Barinas.
“Greg Murphy is synonymous with Holden and motorsport, so we were naturally very enthusiastic to become involved with the team when he approached us with a proposal to enter the rally championship,” said the Managing Director of Holden New Zealand, Kristian Aquilina.
“I had to be part of it,” says Murphy of the revitalised local rally championship.“The new AP4 class is so exciting, it was not hard to make the decision to be involved."
While Marston is still to make a decision on his co-driver, Murphy will continue with experienced codriver Mark Leonard.
“The more time Murph has in a rally car he just keeps getting better and better,” says Leonard. “It’s going to be interesting working up to a fourwheel-drive vehicle, but he is well capable of it.”
“There’s lots to learn,” said Murphy. “There is plenty to do and it’s great having Josh and his experience on board. We have a great and experienced team around us and we are all really looking forward to competing in next season’s championship.
“At the end of the day it’s all about the enjoyment and we are just so excited about being part of the top end of rallying in New Zealand and having Holden on board.”
