In a bid to reduce further environmental damage, governing bodies around the world are beginning to take broad ranging steps in the control of all forms of pollution. Air pollution policies such as European emission regulations, are steadily phasing-in ever-tighter emission requirements and setting testing standards based on the age of the vehicle.
So from 2014 all vehicles in the European Union must meet Euro 6, or Euro VI for heavy duty vehicles plus there are strict measures in the USA controlled by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
However there is a disconnect between emission regulators on testing standards and requirements. There are so many issues pressing demands for human inhabitation which is increasing with a projected population growth rate that will see the world exceed 10-billion people by 2050.
As a result manufacturers of cars, trucks and anything that burns fossil fuels are working on technology improvements to meet the new standards. An example is the heavy duty industry, which has made sweeping changes, and now most truck/bus manufactures will meet, or comply with Euro VI standards.
This now means you need a Heavy Duty scanner to diagnose and perform basic DPF (particulate filter) burn-off, Ad Blue monitoring solution control, oxygen sensors, clear fault codes etc.
Technology now built into all petrol and diesel vehicles to meet these new emission standards requires automotive technicians/mechanics to upskill themselves and upgrade their tech equipment.
