Motor Equipment News - - CONTENT - By Vince Ainsworth, LaunchTech

Each year, cars become more complicated. From the early 1990s, through to cars today can have well more than 100 microprocessors on board. These microprocessors make it near impossible for you to service your customer’s car properly without the manufacturers scan/ software interface.

Primary reasons for this increase in the number of microprocessors are based around the need for sophisticated engine controls to meet emissions and fuel-economy standards along with: • Advanced diagnostics • Simplification of the manufacture

and design of cars. • Weight and cost reduction meaning

less electrical wiring in cars. • Ongoing safety feature requirements. From this need Launch began more than 20 years ago developing a scanner that performs many advanced functions like a factory scan tool, and over these years has created what many of our customers feel is the best value aftermarket scanner on the market today.

Aftermarket scan tools

In the world of automotive diagnostics there are scan tools that are fit for the DIY market and some that are not even fit to switch on.

Some are code readers which only extract OBD data and generic fault codes, and are not suitable for any professional automotive workshop.

Independent workshops require a scan tool to not only clear DTC (fault codes) from each module, but also need to code new modules (Airbag, BCM etc), perform factory resets, adaptions, logic relearn (adapt Transmissions) , service resets, steering angle recalibrations, caliper service mode such as on Audi, BMW, Volvo, etc.

Be aware that diagnostic tools sourced via overseas websites have the potential to cause irreversible and serious damage to your vehicle’s onboard electronic modules.

Some of the workmanship inside fake/cloned units is very poor. It really is a massive risk connecting some of these scanners into the vehicle’s diagnostic port; replacing a module, or reprogramming back at the dealers, is not a cheap fix.

There is a volume quota of so many units per day, and that means quality is no priority at all. Poor soldering, or a wire put in the wrong place, is all it can take to say goodbye to your customer’s car’s modules.

We’ve seen it all. A popular way to sell Launch scanners is to display a range of launch scanners on Chinese websites, boasting to be the official launch dealer. In some case’s this is true in China.

The Chinese domestic launch is completely different in software and hardware. These companies selling them have rewritten/stolen copy English software to satisfy the bargain hunter.

Please Note: LaunchNZ has the top-of-the-line professional series Launch X431 Pad III, or if you want a cheaper version Launch scanner, also supplies and guarantee what we supply as factory genuine and fully supported by us.

Warning: we have switched off some Launch scanners in the last few months bought from illegal channels. Do not buy from companies on Trade Me or others trying to sell Launch, pretending to be genuine. They will be dealt with by head office. If they are claiming they are a NZ master dealer get the scanner serial number and let us know. We can verify it.

We may switch off any scanner purchased through illegal channels. The last thing you want to do is buy a tool which fails to work as described, or find it’s a clone and cannot be registered/repaired/supported.
