Each year, cars be­come more com­pli­cated. From the early 1990s, through to cars to­day can have well more than 100 mi­cro­pro­ces­sors on board. Th­ese mi­cro­pro­ces­sors make it near im­pos­si­ble for you to ser­vice your cus­tomer’s car prop­erly without the man­u­fac­tur­ers scan/ soft­ware in­ter­face.

Pri­mary rea­sons for this in­crease in the num­ber of mi­cro­pro­ces­sors are based around the need for so­phis­ti­cated en­gine con­trols to meet emis­sions and fuel-econ­omy stan­dards along with: • Ad­vanced di­ag­nos­tics • Sim­pli­fi­ca­tion of the man­u­fac­ture

and de­sign of cars. • Weight and cost re­duc­tion mean­ing

less elec­tri­cal wiring in cars. • On­go­ing safety fea­ture re­quire­ments. Af­ter­mar­ket scan tools

In the world of au­to­mo­tive di­ag­nos­tics there are scan tools that are fit for the DIY mar­ket and some that are not even fit to switch on.

Some are code read­ers which only ex­tract OBD data and generic fault codes, and are not suit­able for any pro­fes­sional au­to­mo­tive work­shop.

In­de­pen­dent work­shops re­quire a scan tool to not only clear DTC (fault codes) from each mod­ule, but also need to code new mod­ules (Airbag, BCM etc), per­form fac­tory re­sets, adap­tions, logic re­learn (adapt Trans­mis­sions) , ser­vice re­sets, steer­ing an­gle re­cal­i­bra­tions, caliper ser­vice mode such as on Audi, BMW, Volvo, etc.

Be aware that di­ag­nos­tic tools sourced via over­seas web­sites have the po­ten­tial to cause ir­re­versible and se­ri­ous dam­age to your ve­hi­cle’s on­board elec­tronic mod­ules.

Some of the work­man­ship in­side fake/cloned units is very poor. It re­ally is a mas­sive risk con­nect­ing some of th­ese scan­ners into the ve­hi­cle’s di­ag­nos­tic port; re­plac­ing a mod­ule, or re­pro­gram­ming back at the deal­ers, is not a cheap fix.

There is a vol­ume quota of so many units per day, and that means qual­ity is no pri­or­ity at all. Poor sol­der­ing, or a wire put in the wrong place, is all it can take to say good­bye to your cus­tomer’s car’s mod­ules.

We’ve seen it all. A pop­u­lar way to sell Launch scan­ners is to dis­play a range of launch scan­ners on Chi­nese web­sites, boast­ing to be the of­fi­cial launch dealer. In some case’s this is true in China.

The Chi­nese do­mes­tic launch is com­pletely dif­fer­ent in soft­ware and hard­ware. Th­ese com­pa­nies sell­ing them have rewrit­ten/stolen copy English soft­ware to sat­isfy the bar­gain hunter.
