Walking and biking tracks to take you all over the country

Kiwis are blessed with a wealth of ways to explore the great outdoors. As well as Te Araroa (an epic tramping route stretching from Cape Reinga to Bluff), we have nine Great Walks and 22 Great Rides (which comprise Ngā Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail), not to mention all those other not-classed-as-great-but-stillamazing paths to follow.

Most of these trails (apart from a few private ones) are free to experience and visitors need only cover accommodation and transport costs. You don’t have to be an experienced cyclist or hiker either – beginners can opt for easier day walks, or stay in boutique lodges and have their packs transported on overnight tramps.

A number of tracks are open during winter, while others can be booked ahead for spring. Take a look at some of our favourite journeys over the page and start planning your next adventure.
