The vice of spice

When I was newly married (42 years ago) and trying to impress, I made a casserole that called for chillies. I had never heard of them, let alone eaten anything with a chilli in it. I purchased a packet of dried chillies and threw a few extra in. Many hours later the casserole was ready to serve, but I didn’t know you had to take the dried chillies out beforehand. It was soooo hot. We burned from the inside out and really wanted to go to hospital for a stomach pump, but instead we just drank lots of milk. No dried chillies ever again!
