The vice of spice

When I was newly mar­ried (42 years ago) and try­ing to im­press, I made a casse­role that called for chill­ies. I had never heard of them, let alone eaten any­thing with a chilli in it. I pur­chased a packet of dried chill­ies and threw a few ex­tra in. Many hours later the casse­role was ready to serve, but I didn’t know you had to take the dried chill­ies out be­fore­hand. It was soooo hot. We burned from the in­side out and re­ally wanted to go to hospi­tal for a stom­ach pump, but in­stead we just drank lots of milk. No dried chill­ies ever again!
