Nelson woman is new Hospitality NZ president
Clare Davies says growing up with pub owners for parents prepared her for a life in the hospitality industry.
From sitting in a high chair at the bar to washing dishes at the family’s Lyttelton pub, she now owns Nelson-based hotel management and distribution company called Capstone Resorts and Hotels.
Davies is the new national president of Hospitality New Zealand, the first female to hold the role in the organisation’s 114-year history.
‘‘I think dad only had us so we could be kitchen hands,’’ she said. ‘‘I don’t think I got actually a choice, I just automatically was forced into the industry, which has been great.’’
Over the years, she had worked through all facets of the industry, from the accommodation sector to bars, gaming, restaurants, hotels and backpackers which meant she understood the different challenges that came with them.
Davies has been a member of the association for 15 years. She was also the first woman on the board when elected four years ago and served as the vice president of the Nelson branch last year. She will remain in Nelson in her new role.
Hospitality New Zealand provided regional support for businesses with information about the sector, support dealing with local councils and help with the liquor licensing process.
‘‘It is really exciting news, it is a great organisation to be a part of.’’
