Double gold for Sheat

Nelson Mail - - SPORT - PHILLIP ROLLO

Lucy Sheat is hoping to continue her winning run when she dashes across the ditch later this week.

The Marlborough sprint star secured the 100m-200m double at the New Zealand Track and Field Championship at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton on the weekend, edging her closest competitor, Georgia Hulls, twice in the W20 age group.

She’s now looking to continue that success at the week-long Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney where she will line up in both the junior and senior grades.

She said the motivation for heading to Australia, and entering in the senior grade, was to ‘‘get more experience’’.

‘‘Racing against the calibre of people over there will be so cool and also I just want to try and increase my times and make the most of the amazing conditions,’’ she said. ‘‘I’m not really heading over to any major competitions like I did last winter so this is a good chance to head over- seas and get more experience before I go into winter training.’’

The 17-year-old Marlborough Girls’ College student dominated the 200m in Hamilton, winning the final in 23.96sec - a time that would have seen her finish second in the senior women’s grade.

But her 100m victory was a close one. She only edged Hulls by 0.01sec in a time of 11.96sec.

Though it was well outside her personal best of 11.68sec, national championships are all about the wins and Sheat said she was just pleased to strike gold after finishing second last year.

‘‘My times aren’t 100 per cent what I wanted but it was good to get there and get the double,’’ she said.

Sheat also teamed up with Amanda Fitisemanu, Samantha Hardie and Beth Versey in the 4 x 400m to finish second behind Hawke’s Bay Gisborne in 3min 59.04sec.

Sheat’s haul was just two of Tasman’s five gold medals with Fitisemanu winning the W20 400m hurdles in 62.99sec, Bailey Cotton the M20 200m in 22.25sec and Jared Lautenslager the M20 5000m in a 73sec personal best of time of 14min 43.71sec.

Marlborough’s Alex Dawson was just out of medal contention in the M18 100m final, ending up fourth place in 11.50sec.
