Closed doors

Nelson Mail - - COMMENT&OPINION -

Nelson ratepayers are unaware that NCC has held four workshops on funding for the Waimea dam project by Nelson ratepayers. No information has been made available to the public, as the meetings have been behind closed doors. Where did the mayor and councillors obtain their mandate to give five to eight million dollars of our money for this project?

TDC made no contribution to the Maitai dam or the water treatment plant, and Nelson ratepayers pay some of the highest water rates in the country because of these facilities. Why then should Nelson ratepayers contribute any money to fund Waimea plains irrigators?

With $50 million needed to be spent on our neglected infrastructure, Nelson ratepayers cannot allow the mayor and councillors to sneak this extra spending into the long-term plan. standard for our protection and guidance. Those who come to our shores may respect this more than people born here.
