Urban sprawl

Nelson Mail - - COMMENT&OPINION -

It seems that TDC are finally trying to get to grips with urban sprawl in Richmond. Richmond is spreading outwards, it doesn’t have enough car parking spaces in central Richmond so car parking on side roads is spreading. This makes it difficult for local residents to enter and exit their drives and for their visitors to park somewhere near. We need a change of paradigm. Grasp the nettle and make Richmond Bike Friendly. There is far more to encouraging cycling than the Nelson Taste Trail, great though it is. This town has got to encourage its commuting residents to get on their bikes. Electric bikes are revolutionising commuting, you don’t have to arrive all sweaty! Do we want to go on just as we are and just let things get worse or are we going to actively support everyday cycling in Richmond. You can fit a lot of bikes in one car park space. Businesses should encourage it, as their employees will be fitter and healthier, it’s a win-win call. How about reducing the speed limit in the whole of central Richmond to 40 kph to make cyclists feel safer? Come on let’s have some leadership and vision.
