Victory dairy robbers sentenced to four year prison terms
Three men involved in the armed robbery of a Victory dairy have been sentenced to jail.
Levi Edwards and Jake Howieson appeared in Nelson District Court yesterday via audiovisual link for their parts in the aggravated robbery of the dairy. Edwards was sentenced to four years, five months in jail, and Howieson to four years, eight months.
Earlier yesterday, in the Blenheim District Court, Vincent Kumeroa was sentenced to four years six months’ imprisonment for the aggravated robbery in July last year. All had pleaded guilty.
Edwards’ lawyer asked that a previous brain-injury be taken into account, as character witnesses attested that his behaviour changed after the injury.
Judge Zohrab said many of Edwards’ previous convictions came before the injury, which showed ‘‘a certain attitude, particularly towards court orders’’, but acknowledged their seriousness did increase after the injury.
The judge said he was reluctant to grant Edwards discounts, as he ‘‘wondered if [Edwards] had not already had a reasonable benefit,’’ since the fact that Edwards sourced the weapon and took it into the shop was not taken into account for his sentence start-point of six years, which was the same for all involved.
However, the judge acknowledged that Edwards appeared genuinely remorseful in letters written to the victim and the court.
Howieson was the get-away driver in the robbery, a job which the judge described as ‘‘critical’’ in the robbery indications.
‘‘Though you were the driver and did not go into the dairy, you had been involved in the planning, you obtained the vehicle, and you were aware that there was a weapon to be used. The driver plays a critical role in something such as this, so you are equally guilty as the person who is pointing the gun.’’ in the sentence
