Deal puts universe at musician’s feet
Nelson-born singer songwriter Anna Robinson has signed a deal with Universal Music Publishing Australasia.
It’s been a big year for the 21-year-old, who also hit 1 million streams on her latest release Crave You on Spotify.
‘‘That was amazing, I was like, ‘wow’.
‘‘It was definitely a reassurance that people were listening and having the song being heard by that many people gave me confidence that it is working, that it’s going well.’’
Robinson said that often she was so immersed into the songs she was writing that she started questioning if people would actually like them, so getting that confirmation was great.
‘‘It’s just amazing to have so many messages on Instagram saying what the song means to them. It’s crazy to think someone on the other side of the world is hearing your song and is relating to it.’’
She’s known musically as Robinson, and has spent the last 12 months working with songwriters and producers in Los Angeles and London.
‘‘It was definitely a writing phase for such a long time and then it came to releasing the music and it was like wow, it’s such a different ball game really.
‘‘You’re obviously in the zone of going to a studio, it’s kind of comfortable because you’re writing stuff but no one is hearing it. It’s so much fun but very different.’’
Robinson is releasing her next single Nothing to Regret on February 23, which is about her life in the past year.
It’s the song that solidified her deal with Universal Music Publishing Australasia.
A Garin College alumni, Robinson is now based in Auckland.
‘‘All throughout growing up I was very musically inclined and would always sing around the house. I taught myself the piano and picked up a little bit of the guitar after that.’’
She hoped a move to either Los Angeles or London could be on the cards, but she would always call New Zealand home.
