Field trip

Nelson Mail - - NEWS -

A man who drove off the road, through a fence, and into a paddock after a night out drinking in Motueka was three times the legal limit. Corey McCabe, 26, appeared for sentencing in the Nelson District Court on Monday on charges of careless driving and excess breath alcohol. A police summary of facts said McCabe had been driving along Motueka River Westbank Rd about 10pm on Friday, March 16. He’d been drinking in Motueka and "thought he could make it home safe", but drove off the sealed road and into a paddock. He was not injured but the car was written off. Breath tests found him to have 856 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath – more than three times the legal limit of 250mcg. Judge David Ruth sentenced McCabe to 80 hours’ community work and disqualified him from driving for six months – to begin once his existing period of disqualification ends.
