White Ferns thrashed
New Zealand suffered yet another heavy loss at the hands of England in the first ODI women’s cricket international at Leeds. The White Ferns were beaten by 142 runs as Amy Jones and Heather Knight both scored 63, leading England to 290-5 in the first innings. Despite a 70-run opening stand between Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, New Zealand never got close as the 10 wickets fell for just 78 runs in the space of 21.2 overs. England host New Zealand in a further two one day internationals. ‘‘Very disappointed,’’ coach Haidee Tiffen said. ‘‘We had been playing some good one day cricket over the last 12 months. Full credit to England, they played very well and put a lot of pressure on us. We didn’t execute our plans with the ball, and losing wickets in clumps really shifted the momentum over to them.’’
