His­toric Mus­cle Cars Up­date

At the time of writ­ing, the His­toric Mus­cle Car / Aus­tralian Trans-am grid for the 2014 New Zealand Fes­ti­val of Mo­tor Rac­ing (NZFMR) had swelled out to 28 cars, with an­other two still ex­pected to en­ter. The eight ATA cars are as listed in the last is­sue of NZCC, now with the ex­cep­tion of Harry Char­alam­bous. Harry is hav­ing a ’67 Mus­tang built, but the car won’t be ready in time to be shipped to New Zealand, so his spot has now been taken by John Samois and his beau­ti­ful blue 1969 Mus­tang fast­back (see photo).

The Kiwi HMC con­tin­gent is as fol­lows: Dean Cameron (1965 Mus­tang), Pete Stevenson (1966 Mus­tang), Kevin Gim­blett (1967 Ca­maro), Dave Stur­rock (1967 Ca­maro), Nigel Macdon­ald (1967 Mus­tang), Steve El­liott (1968 Ca­maro), Colin Daw­son (1968 Ca­maro), Brett Pierce (HK GTS Monaro), Dale Mathers (1969 Mus­tang), Roger Wil­liams (1969 Ca­maro), Tony Roberts (1970 Mus­tang), Mur­ray Brown (1970 Ca­maro), John Samp­son (Capri V6), Keith Sin­clair (1970 Ply­mouth Cuda), Mitch Mexted (Per­ana V8), Glenn Alling­ham (XY Fal­con GTHO), Craig Horn (To­rana XU-1), John Mck­ech­nie (XA Fal­con hard­top), Gary Raiti (XA Fal­con hard­top), and Scott Samp­son (Capri V6).

With­out doubt this is the largest field of pe­riod-cor­rect big-bore sedans ever as­sem­bled in New Zealand, and one of the big­gest fields you will see any­where in the world, and it’s con­fir­ma­tion of the fact there are gen­uine car en­thu­si­asts in this coun­try who just want to go rac­ing for the en­joy­ment of the cars.

Sev­eral driv­ers are mak­ing their HMC de­buts at the NZFMR, in­clud­ing Dave Stur­rock, Colin Daw­son, Mitch Mexted and Craig Horn. Dave has been build­ing his Ca­maro for a cou­ple of years. The beau­ti­ful Gulf Oil–coloured ma­chine is sport­ing a small-block V8 topped with me­chan­i­cal fuel in­jec­tion. Colin is mak­ing the long trek up from In­ver­cargill in the ex Glenn Alling­ham Ca­maro he has been rac­ing the last sea­son in the far South. Mitch Mexted is a sec­ond-gen­er­a­tion racer, whose fa­ther Tony com­peted back in the ’60s. The Capri Per­ana Mitch will race is some­thing of a stop­gap, as he and Tony have also re­cently pur­chased an XY Fal­con, which they’ll build to HMC spec. Craig Horn will race the beau­ti­ful and very quick lit­tle XU-1 To­rana he nor­mally cam­paigns with the bril­liant Pro­duc­tion Mus­cle Car Group.

As well as the new HMC driv­ers, the Fal­con XY be­ing raced by Glenn Alling­ham is mak­ing its HMC de­but.

To add fur­ther to the spec­ta­cle is news the NZFMR or­ga­niz­ers have granted HMC per­mis­sion to use a 1970 Mus­tang con­vert­ible pace car to lead each HMC/ATA race dur­ing its open­ing line-up lap. This will fur­ther add to the pe­riod feel of the event, as pace cars were used for SCCA Trans-am races in pe­riod, as well as the Indy 500, Day­tona 500, and even events here in New Zealand.
