Historic Muscle Cars Update
At the time of writing, the Historic Muscle Car / Australian Trans-am grid for the 2014 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing (NZFMR) had swelled out to 28 cars, with another two still expected to enter. The eight ATA cars are as listed in the last issue of NZCC, now with the exception of Harry Charalambous. Harry is having a ’67 Mustang built, but the car won’t be ready in time to be shipped to New Zealand, so his spot has now been taken by John Samois and his beautiful blue 1969 Mustang fastback (see photo).
The Kiwi HMC contingent is as follows: Dean Cameron (1965 Mustang), Pete Stevenson (1966 Mustang), Kevin Gimblett (1967 Camaro), Dave Sturrock (1967 Camaro), Nigel Macdonald (1967 Mustang), Steve Elliott (1968 Camaro), Colin Dawson (1968 Camaro), Brett Pierce (HK GTS Monaro), Dale Mathers (1969 Mustang), Roger Williams (1969 Camaro), Tony Roberts (1970 Mustang), Murray Brown (1970 Camaro), John Sampson (Capri V6), Keith Sinclair (1970 Plymouth Cuda), Mitch Mexted (Perana V8), Glenn Allingham (XY Falcon GTHO), Craig Horn (Torana XU-1), John Mckechnie (XA Falcon hardtop), Gary Raiti (XA Falcon hardtop), and Scott Sampson (Capri V6).
Without doubt this is the largest field of period-correct big-bore sedans ever assembled in New Zealand, and one of the biggest fields you will see anywhere in the world, and it’s confirmation of the fact there are genuine car enthusiasts in this country who just want to go racing for the enjoyment of the cars.
Several drivers are making their HMC debuts at the NZFMR, including Dave Sturrock, Colin Dawson, Mitch Mexted and Craig Horn. Dave has been building his Camaro for a couple of years. The beautiful Gulf Oil–coloured machine is sporting a small-block V8 topped with mechanical fuel injection. Colin is making the long trek up from Invercargill in the ex Glenn Allingham Camaro he has been racing the last season in the far South. Mitch Mexted is a second-generation racer, whose father Tony competed back in the ’60s. The Capri Perana Mitch will race is something of a stopgap, as he and Tony have also recently purchased an XY Falcon, which they’ll build to HMC spec. Craig Horn will race the beautiful and very quick little XU-1 Torana he normally campaigns with the brilliant Production Muscle Car Group.
As well as the new HMC drivers, the Falcon XY being raced by Glenn Allingham is making its HMC debut.
To add further to the spectacle is news the NZFMR organizers have granted HMC permission to use a 1970 Mustang convertible pace car to lead each HMC/ATA race during its opening line-up lap. This will further add to the period feel of the event, as pace cars were used for SCCA Trans-am races in period, as well as the Indy 500, Daytona 500, and even events here in New Zealand.
